I have been thinking of relocating. My life needs a change and I am getting tired of where I am. I have been thinking that the greatish state of Colorado would be a good choice for this California native. What do you all think of it? What would be a good alternative to live in the Denver Metro area?

The only seeming lead for a job I have would be out there because apparently no one outside of oil wants to hire an ex frac engineer with a ChemE degree, so I’m kinda interested what it’d be like out there.

Really? I would think ChemE would be something lots of people would be looking for.

I can’t find shit. I spent 2.5 years working as a field engineer for a major oil field service company and have a ChemE degree from a really good school and can’t find anything. It’s been 6 months now and I’m getting very discouraged.

I moved to Denver from Louisiana 2.5 years ago and I’ve never looked back.

Huh, well I am sorry to hear that. I just find that odd. What would you do in CO?

In those 2 years you’re alma mater probably flushed out 1,000 people with that degree that are willing to take peanuts at any job that’s available unfortunately. Since you have experience you know you want to be paid for it, those with none will take what they can get.

Be patient a company who needs someone with REAL experience is going to come along and you’ll be a shoe in.

Same thing I used to do, frac wells. It’d be with a production company this time and apparently the schedule would apparently be 7 on, 7 off. I really don’t want to go back to the oil field, nor do I want to live in CO; however, I need to find a job, I’m losing my mind.

I was curious to see how many people had graduated since I did. They’ve awarded 642 BS ChBE degrees since fall of 2012. You are correct that I do want to get paid for my experience, but have told companies I’m up to negotiation on salary.

I’ve had a couple interviews and haven’t gotten anything positive back, it’s the waiting game that fucking sucks. I hate waiting for something to come along, especially considering this is an indefinite amount of time.

642 just at your school, imagine the rest of the schools across the nation.

I know the waiting game sucks and being unemployed can really drain your motivation I’ve been there but something will come! Got to stay positive and stay persistent, hopefully this Colorado place comes through for you.

Denver traffic is getting to be pretty horrible. Rent prices are through the roof. To buy a house, you need $300k+ for anything decent in a nice neighborhood. Cost of living is close to on par with California - my buddy looked recently and it was under 10% difference.

We have 268 sunny days per year, weather is great. Anything fun in the mountains is an hour away from downtown, minimum. Snow comes and you want to ski at a resort? Prices are awful and drives times there and back are so bad I don’t even bother with the season pass any longer.

Paradise? Not so much. Good place to live? Yes. What do you do for a living and can you do it outside of Denver? Colorado Springs is cheaper. Greeley is cheaper. Ft Collins, not so much. Boulder - forget it.

Loveland, Colorado Springs, Greeley, Fort Collins. I lived there for a bit ten years ago, though I’m sure it’s changed a lot since but I absolutely loved it.

All Californians move to Colorado eventually

We moved out here from the upper peninsula of Michigan when I was 4, approximately 150 years ago at the end of the 70's. I mostly grew up in Colorado Springs, which is really beautiful but now it’s kinda weird because all the people migrated out of the central areas of the city out to the east side, which is now just utter sprawl. I’ve lived in Denver since ‘95, though my dad has been up here since ‘83 when my parents divorced. My mom and stepdad recently retired to the far south end of the state.

I love it here. I will never leave unless I’m forced to. I think the complaints about traffic are overstated, though it does seem worse in the afternoons. But the weather is awesome for most of the year, and we really don’t get that much snow in the winter. (It all comes in April.) I love living in a city, and I also love that the mountains are close if I need to get away from the city. It’s pretty LGBT-friendly here, too. Since we’ve been together, my partner and I have never had anyone give us as much as a second look when we’re together, and it’s very apparent we’re an old married couple. (“You have enough cereal.” “Shut up, I’m buying it anyway.”)

It’s funny to see you post this. Our road trip got my wife and I talking about something similar. I really loved it out west. Feels weird being back in Atlanta again.

So Colorado Springs is only an hour South and much more chill. Obviously not as much going on but it’s growing. Downtown Springs is blowing up, lots of food and beer places opening and its way less expensive.

We bought a house in downtown and love the area. We can bike to many breweries or take an Uber for like $7 one-way.

Obviously there are much prettier places in CO but being “in the city” is either Denver or Colorado Springs. Boulder is expensive as shit and I’ve heard Ft. Collins is similar. Highly recommend moving out here! (No pun intended)

I moved here from Illinois two years ago and love it, it is getting pretty expensive though, although coming from cali it’s probably cheaper, I have another friend that just moved here after college at UC Davis and then spending a couple years in Boston so it’s cheap to him. Any more specific questions, ask away!

Hmm, yeah my current guy friend is from Colorado and talks about how great it is. Plus I have never lived anywhere that experiences real seasons. We are pretty LGBT friendly here, but its a small area that isn’t very diverse (compared to Long Beach, CA where I grew up). Only once really had problems where a group of assholes threw pennies and me and my ex.

Seasons are underrated. I don’t even mind the snow that much, as long as we don’t have one of those winters where we’re constantly pounded with snow.

There is a joke somewhere in there. I love the snow and i really want to try living in it. I am sure they are overrated and probably can’t compare (for me anyway) to living next to the ocean. Everything I have done in life has somehow related to the ocean. The only thing I would worry about is salt if they salt your roads.

We use mag chloride in winter. Fortunately, there’s barely any humidity so as long as you wash your cars regularly you should be fine.
